Gary on car focused was down on power in his mk2 recently. Turned out his cat had failed. How do you know it has a sports cat? Assuming you have reciept?

Not sure a smoke machine will help tho, will it pressurise the system? If  you have been through all pipes and so on would be obvious, turbo connection is the hardest to get at tho. Do you have stock pipes and intercooler?

Yeh just got the car Saturday morning but done 600 miles no issues until I gave it some proper beans and now I’m in this situation. As far as I know it has a stock map. I only thought a decat would bring up a code but I’ve not had much to do with them until recently so I’m not 100%

And just got told by the seller it had a sports cat and he bought it with one on a year and a half ago, I’ll see if I can tell what make it is when I’m next underneath which will be tomorrow I can imagine. And pipe wise I have a ramair induction and crossover pipe that leads to the turbo then that’s it the rest is stock to the intercooler, intercooler is stock and from intercooler to intake manifold is stock

Gareth, I think you are mistaken about 6000 revs being 140 ish,  140 is more like 5250 revs in 6th, and 6000 revs is like 160mph, and flat out is about 6300 at 167 ish indicated…

    No nothing.

No Mods. No rockers. Just a chunky knob, thats now been replaced by an RS knob innit.

    No tackiness.

Std as Ford intended, but with a space saver wheel and jack and nuts and wheel brace. oh.. and flaps, a man has got to have flaps.

    Innit?

Its been more or less the same for a few of us, even the guy on youtube 6K just under 140 or 220 kph…. Add a NX2 and a 7400 limiter and you hit the clock 😆

Right, had a look and I can’t tell what cat it is but it looks newer and less marked/corroded than the rest of the exhaust so presume it has a sports cat as the previous owner said.

changed the spark plugs and no difference so set off home from work and after it was warm I thought I’d see what it does if I went higher in the revs(have been driving like a granny since it lost power) and at 5500rpm there was a squeaky rattle so I let off and the noise went away as soon as it dropped in revs, no lights still and still runs fine low down just lacking power.

The sound reminded me of a transporter we had in thats tensioner on the fan belt rattled like hell but on the transporter the rattle was constant no matter what revs you went to. Still not sure what it could be but at least I have something to go off now, got a rather busy weekend so going to park her up until work on Monday then investigate further

if the RS does 81 mph @ 3000 revs, its 100% for sure that at 6000revs its doing 162mph or thereabouts, gearing does not get shorter as the revs go up. Gareth, in those screenshots, hes in 5th gear innit !  231 KMH is about 140mph, and thats NOT flat out in 6th, its flat in 5th.

Stock map would have to be some length to the air strip? 😆 6000 rpm in mine is 140 ish not flat road tho… limiter 7200 rpm. Might be something simple as said before, boost pipe off / split or so on…?

I remember seeing the Stradman video sometime ago, where his stock RS topped out at 145 mph on a dry lakebed…. and run out of lakebed, to get to 6000 rpm, not as good as a tarmac run tho i guess… 8:50 mins in on vid

Right, had a specialist come in yesterday  and diagnose best he can and thinks it’s leaking past the stock recirculation valve once boost builds up so got a GFB recirc valve coming today hopefully to solve the boost problem. The rattle I was hearing we’re thinking is aircon pulley so gonna take off the aircon belt tonight when I fit the new recirc valve and see if the rattle goes away at high revs, will let you know how well that plan goes👍

Update after much investigation, the cars been running fine since I fit the recirc valve but still low on power. Had it in to my local Ford and found it’s got low compression on cylinder 3 so we’re thinking a piston ring. I’ve took the engine out tonight and I’ll look tomorrow after work what the inside is looking like then update you. Plan is to get forged components and upgrade them before anything else goes and I end up doing the same again.

oooh, so thats probably a broken piston ring LAND ( the thin bit of piston that supports the ring(s)   you have probably just caught it in time before it goes POP !  keep us updated innit.
