If the Yaris had a Ford badge on it you just know all the ‘soshal meedya’ sheeple would only be talking about how cheap and tacky the the GR interior is  and how floppy the rear parcel shelf is, and how pathetic it sounds from the outside, and how overtly fake the FENG is, but because its not a Ford everyone is going all puppy love over it and saying things like ” oh you can see where Toyota spent the money, on the mechanical and chassis and hence  they did not have enough money left over to spend it on the inside” blah blah blah ! I think the hype bubble is going to burst very soon with this car and its going to depreciate rapidly. I already see and hear folk saying its too grippy and too planted and that its not really fun unless you are going at a speed round a bend where you are going to have a big off and kill lots of people! oh, and so many now repeating the old chestnut ” a great point-to point car”  er, what is it an Irish steeplechaser?   I thought you always did drive your car ‘point to point’ !! oh, and ” its a great B-road in the wet car, nothing will touch it”  !! yeah, getting bored already ! Maybe its too capable to be fun !! I see on youtube one has blown up 5 laps after an over  rev round the ‘ring’.

    No nothing.

No Mods. No rockers. Just a chunky knob, thats now been replaced by an RS knob innit.

    No tackiness.

Std as Ford intended, but with a space saver wheel and jack and nuts and wheel brace. oh.. and flaps, a man has got to have flaps.

    Innit?

I dont think you can blame the car for blowing up when it gets downshifted from 5-2.

But, the rest you say is true

What gearbox allows the driver to accidentally downshift from 5th to 2nd instead of 4th? 😂

tonys… a manual one ! he probably got a  bit heavy handed and went straight across the gate. I was having a go at someone in the focus a few years back and went flat in second up to 5th gear instead of 3rd and that was that, race lost !! was so used to a 4 speed 2000E gearbox !!

Hi BDA,   Some fair points and observation you make there, wouldn’t argue against them,  the hype and “can do no wrong” coverage has been getting a bit vomit inducing.  I posted my first drive review and points table over on the GR forum, think it raised a few eyebrows. Better to form your own opinion and block out the “influencers” wanting 25K for a good word posted !

One of my key points was the RS is more fun at lower speeds and the GRY is in a way too capable, it is quicker than a stock RS and more capable, but less engaging.  A modified RS, well that could be anything, obviously my comparison was based on my mods.

That said, I have ordered one, not to better or replace the RS, it won’t, but because it is great car and amazing that a big company like Toyota burnt so much money on building it.  It is quite unique in this EV era we have forced upon us, while I do agree the RS brand is stronger and better residuals I think the GRY will be popular and hold quite well for some time.  It will be modifiers favourite and track day choice I think for some time.

With 0% finance over 2 years, 5 year warranty that includes track days why not have the experience first hand, Then decide if it’s a keeper or move on to something else.

So FENG can be switched off, sporty back boxes are now a plenty and even Litchfild has a spring and dampers package out. Like the RS the opportunity to make it how you like is getting there very quickly.

You’ll be pleased to know it doesn’t look like any chance to supply and fit DSC modules LOL…  Though I have asked Tractive if they have any damper plans 😉

Got to agree with your rational, I have ordered one as the 0% 2years gives you options and time on decisions and the 5 year warranty. I agree it does feel quicker than a standard RS, just cannot understand how some can say it is a bit too grippy and capable. But hey ho everyone is entitled to an opinion. There is no doubt its a special car the likes of which I thought were not going to be developed with the rise of electric.

Coast, I like the look of the GR and that you can tell its a bit lighter than the RS, I just didnt find it an ‘event’  driving it like the feeling you get in the RS, I think its too grippy to be playful and have fun with on public roads without looking and driving like a complete maniac at ridiculous speeds, the RS can be chucked about and got loose a bit easier at slower speeds I felt. I’m a bit gutted that it disappointed me, I was hoping for real fun but found driving normally in traffic  it may as well have been a std Yaris for  all the drama it didn’t give, at least in similar conditions in the RS you can get a  bit of snap crackle and pop out the back and feel the rear drive unit move the power about etc if you simply give the loud pedal a quick squirt.  I truly think a little Fiesta ST200 would probably score higher in the fun and chuckability ratings for me. IF I did not have the Focus I would probably have bought one, but I’m not going to have both as really they are both the same sort of car and the RS is more practical and to me better equipped and better interior so a bit pointless. Innit?

Whether the Yaris fits what people are looking for in a car or not, props to Toyota for building the thing. This is a car that is produced in the same factory that they used for the LFA, on a completely bespoke chassis / body, sharing no parts with any other manufacturer. For a company who are “all about hybrid” it really is a statement. Just proves that if a car manufacturer wants to do something they can. Orders now May 2022 and I doubt any of the buyers got anything more off than the 0%. The MK4 RS was possible? I’m a little biased as worked with Toyota for 25 years. Great to still have cars like this. Long live the Performance Hatchback!!

This is why I will have a choice of two either RS or GRY. I can afford it and realise not everyone will be in the same position as I can garage it alongside my RS. My son is trying his utmost to get me into an Msport Competition BMW, but just cannot part with the £60k plus that I would need to get the right car for me. And more importantly there’s not enough pedals for me. Some have said if they announced an RS Fiesta that would be the car to go for, and probably that’s the only announcement that would cause me to cancel the GRY. As it stands I don’t think its going to happen most manufacturers have their eye on developing electric, and again can’t see me going that route either.

    @ Coastliner

Spot on.  Also fortune enough to have both,  RS is a semi garage queen, 18K miles in 4.5 years. GRY is to be the all year around daily.  Hope to keep my Z4 35is for summer cruises as well, but that’s the one in the balance for now.

Yep if a Fiesta RS was announced I’d cancel the GRY, or plan to flip it when it came out.   But Ford have their 95 gram average C02 target to meet.
