    No nothing.

No Mods. No rockers. Just a chunky knob, thats now been replaced by an RS knob innit.

    No tackiness.

Std as Ford intended, but with a space saver wheel and jack and nuts and wheel brace. oh.. and flaps, a man has got to have flaps.

I’d go petrol if doing low mileage cos as others have pointed out – the TDCi isnt a fan of short trips and neither is the DPF – you need to give it a good run for 20/30 minutes to regenerate it.   Not to mention the residuals on the TDCi have plummeted in recent years (I bought mine at £26k and struggled to get £18k for it 16 months later.  Plus if the urge ever comes – at least with an extra 70bhp over the TDCi you can take the car out and rag it around country roads 😉

Petrol for sure, diesels aren’t much different on mpg for short trips around town when you’re constantly in stop/start traffic.

Yes I find the petrol one flexible and economical enough, especially on the motorway at 34 miles to the gallon, combined is around 30, can’t knock that.  Short runs is nearer 20, but then what you save in diesel, you waste in DPF maintenance and / or weekend blast to compensate.  Hear good things about the torque usage in higher gears, so then becomes a matter of opinion I suppose.  Wouldn’t mind a try in a diesel one to see what it is like.

my old daily 1400 tci fiesta does 57mpg every gallon round town , the dump car, a 1250 zetec petrol only gets 40-45 round town. A diesel is soo much more frugal ! Even my old diesel Volvo S60 D5 auto does  40 round town and 55+ on a trip and thats a 2.5 5 pot. Oh.. and the RS is on…. 29.5 mpg !!! go on, have a go if you think you are hard enough !! 😎

    29.5 mpg Mike!!.

    You ain’t driving it right.

I haven’t had it above 20 since it was running in.

Bought the missus a new Skoda Kodiaq diesel last year and she’s struggling to get 30 out of it round town. I took it down to Windsor and back a few weeks ago and I managed about 43 but we are dissapointed to say the least.

Mind you, the Skoda is 1920 Kg’s so well over 2T with me in it. Innit?.

Dave, you’re revving the diesel too much then ! change up earlier/short shift and gently ride the torque on a light throttle and it will do more than 43mpg, my neighbour complained his 2.2 Civic diesel was juicy, he took me out and he was driving it like a vtec petrol!! revving the nuts off it through the gears on part throttle, i showed him light throttle and changing up early and now hes well happy with it!

Regarding the RS on 29.5 average since the FSA about 1300 miles ago, well, I just don’t have any empty fast roads near me anymore, theres the bill everywhere and cameras and average speed cameras all over the show so its literally killed my enjoyment of it and the Escort really, I do manage to give it a squirt every time I go out in it, that drops the overall average down a bit quite fast, and then when I just cruise around all casual it creeps up again back to that sort of average. And to be honest, I’m only really impressed by the car round bends and traction etc rather than its straightline speed. I also still get more of a ‘buzz’ out of the BDA and can wind that up easier and without getting to such silly speeds you need to be doing in the Focus to get any sensation of speed!
