Help! Just had a garage clear out, followed by a few bevvies to clear the head. God knows why I’m still on this forum when I’ve sold my RS (3 months ago) having been one of the first on the road with one. I now have a Golf R that I am extremely happy with.  So why the f…k am I still here? The answer is “I don’t know”. In general terms I think the Golf, for me,  is a better car and better value for your money. I reiterate “why am I still here?”. Well I’ve just had a garage clear out. I piled all my “rubbish” to one end of the garage and called out the “Clear the Crap” brigade. I was looking out of the window as all my old crap was unceremoniasly dumped onto the wagon. This included the odd pieces of timber that we all keep “just in case!”, plus old curtain rails that would be useful in the event of a nuclear war. BUT along with that came my – clutch alignment tool, suspension spring compressor, starter motor thingy ,torque wrench, valve grinder dooby doo, something that looked like a sex aid that is supposed to balance twin carbs, loads of bits of wire that did something really important in  1970, and tools that I had fabricated to do certain tasks in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the night when it’s pissing with rain. Heart breaking. I was watching a really exciting part of my past being dumped into the back of an old truck to be dumped in some land fill somewhere. I wanted to end as I had started with a fast/or maybe not so fast Ford. This made me pour an extra glass of what makes you happy! I would have loved to have had a fast ford as my last vehicle but alas the RS was too much for me at my age (71) as I would never have reached its full potential, plus I had steering problems/issues that I found hard to live with. With the Golf it’s much more flexible and it is more than capable of fulfilling everyday tasks and can switch at the press of a button into a mean machine. I don’t give a “Donald Duck” what people think about so called boring Golf R’s, I just enjoy a good car.

Maybe I’ve answered my own question. I’m on here cos I was hoping Ford would come up with a car that’s the dogs doo dahs! I loved the Ford Prefect 100E and it’s side valved engine with 3 speed gearbox. Strange thing is that my old Prefect had a crack on the top of the head where the top radiator hose fitted and I used “Radweld” to fix it. Good old fashioned red gunge worked a treat!!! The Anglia 105E (with 1600 GT engine), the Lotus Cortina, the various Escorts and the solid Fiestas. So why is the new Focus so out of line with previous incarnations? Please, Mr. Ford, give me a 4wd Fiesta RS with DCT, lots of noise, colours that need sunglasses to temper, wide arches that don’t need add on spacers, loads of negative camber, built in rollcage, cos, well, I need one, an interior that doesn’t look as though it’s made by IKEA and a sound system that can blast Led Zeppelin and the Who to painful levels. In other words “make my day” please!!!

OK I’ve had a few too many today. And I think it’s time I moved on. It’s been fun at times and I have learned things about modern vehicles that I didn’t know before, so I am grateful for that. I have also learnt a lot about modern “social media” and all that that involves.

I look forward to my first Electric RS. No doubt you will be able to download sound tracks of exhaust systems to make it sound like a real car. Me, I’m going to download sounds of milk bottles rattling together as it will remind me of the old milk floats!!! Think I’ll take a stroll down the pub and have a clinical pint in a sterile environment. I’m sure I’ll regret posting this tomorrow but to be honest I don’t really give a s…t . I think I need to move on. Bye Bye.

Cheers, with no word from Ford over the many engine failures, you made the right call.

Harsh again hammy. I believe John is not a well man at present so maybe have a bit of soul and show some respect? Apart from that he is one of our ‘senior’ members so again should be shown some respect, and for the fact he has ACTUALLY had an RS.
