US versus EU Sync Set Up

Hi -. I noticed in a few videos the US RS audio set up has a silver box connected to the sub in the boot, but none of the European models show this.  Certainly mine does not.

Is that a preamp? Despite being on sync 3 with the latest software updates – the sound is still quite flat and missing depth.  I guess the car sound makes up for it 🙂
