Snow forecast in Paris as France shivers in early December chill. The French capital is set to see December snow this weekend, as temperatures dip across the country.

Paris is expected to see its first snow of winter this weekend, with temperatures falling to between one and three degrees. As France’s hottest year on record enters its final month, a small amount of snow is forecast in the greater Paris region on Friday evening – specifically Yvelines and part of Val-d’Oise, while rain in Essonne will mix with snow. Overnight, flurries are expected in Seine-Saint-Denis and into Paris itself – but no more than a dusting is expected. Snow, this early in the season, is unusual in the capital. In 2010, 11 centimetres fell on December 9th, paralysing the city’s public transport system. It was the worst snowfall in the city in 25 years – and has not been repeated since. Generally, snow in Paris does not stick around.

The situation across Europe this week is supported by a dipole weather pattern, with low pressure over the Atlantic and western Europe and more stable weather farther east and south. Starting tonight, an Arctic cold blast will begin spreading from north to south into the UK and Ireland first, gradually overspreading the rest of western and also central Europe for the weekend. Temperatures will be significantly lower than normal, the coldest for this winter season so far. A lot of snow is forecast for the Alps while flooding rain farther south as several frontal systems will cross the European continent. Potential is also increasing for some good amounts of snow across a large part of central and partly western Europe later next week. The next few days, possibly even extending into late next week, will see pretty cold mid-December weather, which should bring winter storms, snow, local blizzards, and significant amounts of rain with flooding for parts of the Mediterranean region.

    America 13th December 2022

A dangerous combination of heavy snow, sleet and ice were expected to batter parts of the Plains and Upper Midwest beginning Tuesday after a significant winter storm swept across the West, dumping several inches of snow and disrupting travel. More than 13 million people across the region were under a winter weather advisory and about a half million people, in parts of Colorado, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wyoming, were under a blizzard warning. The Northern and Central Plains to the Upper Midwest could see “multiple days of significant impacts to travel and infrastructure due to snow, blowing snow and freezing rain,” according to forecasters with the National Weather Service, which emphasised that “travel may become impossible” and warned that snow accumulations could reach 18 inches. More than two feet was possible in parts of South Dakota and Nebraska. Accumulating ice and gusty winds of 40 to 50 miles per hour were also possible.

The snow was expected to taper off from west to east during the day on Tuesday, the service said, adding that additional accumulations of snow were possible for some regions, especially in the mountain ranges of the central Great Basin, Central and Southern Rockies, and Arizona.

Damaging winds, hail and tornadoes will be a risk to over 20 million people in eastern Texas and Oklahoma, all of Louisiana and parts of Arkansas and Mississippi.

Tornadoes are not uncommon this time of year, but they are less likely than in the spring and early summer.

Severe winter storms like the ones predicted this week can be more dangerous than ones that form during peak severe weather season, in May and June.

“Because days are shorter,” said Harold Brooks, a senior scientist with the National Severe Storms Laboratory, part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, these storms are “more likely to occur after dark.” This “makes them more dangerous” because people in harm’s way cannot spot them as they approach, he said. Flash flooding is also a concern Tuesday from Houston up to the north of Memphis. The excessive rainfall from this storm will push east Wednesday, putting much of the South at risk for abundant rainfall that could produce flash flooding. The heaviest rainfall is likely from Louisiana through north-central Mississippi and western Tennessee.

    BIG SNOWSTORMS HIT US
A powerful storm has brought heavy snow and extreme weather to parts of the US and Canada. There have been reports of huge dumps ski  lifts buried, high avalanche risk and road closures. The weather closed down mountain highways in some states in the western US which were expecting around 60cm of snow to fall. On Tuesday, Park City Mountain in Utah reported that it had already seen more than 1.8m of snow in the previous 24 hour period.

The US Forest Service has issued a warning of dangerous avalanche conditions for the backcountry in the mountains west of Lake Tahoe. Wild weather has been continuing in parts of North America with high winds and heavy snowfall forecast into Wednesday (14th December). According to BBC News, more than 20 million people were under severe weather advisories in the US on Tuesday.

Blizzard warnings from the National Weather Service – predicting winds of at least 35mph and big dumps of snow – were in effect for several states, including Colorado. The Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC) announced at the weekend that in the previous 7 days, observers had reported more than 400 avalanches in the state as the snowpack passed a tipping point. “One hundred thirty-seven of these were large enough to bury someone, and 294 were natural,” CAIC said. “This should be warning enough that the snowpack is dangerous. This weekend signs of instability, like natural avalanches, will diminish, but human triggering remains likely.”

@turbo, the UK gets a respite next week for a week or so turning cold again between Christmas and new year. Early indications are cool wet weather for the first week of January, the very north of Scotland could see some snow. Hang in there cool and wet could be better than freezing cold and snow.

-13 degrees is fairly cold đŸ„¶đŸ„¶đŸ„¶

Some of my favourite roads are no go at the moment.
On the other hand motorways can be improved by going off at nearly every junction and exploring the roundabouts?

    Vancouver Canada

Meteorologists warn that Western Canada will get hit with some of the coldest air on Earth next week. While Metro Vancouver won’t see the bone-chilling lows seen in the prairies, some piercing cold air will make its way into the region, bringing temperatures significantly below seasonal averages.

The Weather Network says Oymyakon, a rural area in Eastern Siberia and the “coldest permanently inhabited settlement on the planet,” saw its coldest temperature since 1984, with a bone-chilling -61 C low on Dec. 12. And the glacial air mass will make its way south from Russia to the Lower Mainland starting this weekend, according to a new report. Since some of the worst cold snaps in Canadian history have originated overseas, locals should brace for bitterly cold weather and possibly above-average snowfall. “Siberian air is the real deal,” notes The Weather Network meteorologist Tyler Hamilton. By scanning the upper levels of the atmosphere, the weather channel has been tracking the lobe of frigid air as it makes its way across the Arctic Ocean and Northern Alaska. Over the weekend, the backside of a ridge building across western Alaska will create the ideal conduit to funnel the freezing air mass down to British Columbia and the Prairies. While the Lower Mainland will see temperatures plummet well below seasonal averages, including as low as -7 C, the Prairie provinces “may struggle to climb out of the minus 30s,” with some areas seeing temperatures drop down to the minus 40s.

Metro Vancouver weather forecast and the arrival of freezing Arctic air
Although snowfall is expected to accompany the subzero temperatures, it’s too early to say exactly how much of the white stuff locals can expect at sea level and on the ski hills. But the combination of the moist Pacific Ocean and freezing Arctic air “ultimately pose snowfall threats,” notes The Weather Network. “Some of the most memorable snow events in Canadian history have tapped into similar setups and delivered mind-numbing amounts of snow.”The Weather Network and Environment Canada called for below-average temperatures in their respective winter weather forecasts in Metro Vancouver following the snowiest November in over a decade. Prior to the start of meteorological winter, there were a variety of temperatures throughout the fall, and taking an average temperature for the 90 days doesn’t tell the complete story.Instead, a closer look at the fall season in Vancouver shows that it was “volatile” and a “season of extremes,” according to a new report.

Japan: Adverse winter weather forecast across the Tohoku and Hokuriku regions through at least Dec. 20
Heavy snowfall forecast across the Tohoku and Hokuriku regions, Japan, through at least Dec. 20. Hazardous travel conditions likely.

Heavy snowfall is forecast across the Tohoku and Hokuriku regions through at least Dec. 20. The heavy snow will likely lead to hazardous travel conditions due to slippery roads and reduced visibility.

As of Dec. 19, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has issued the following weather warnings across Hokkaido:

Red heavy snow warnings (the middle level on a three-tier scale): northern Ishikawa, most of Niigata, and southern Yamagata prefectures.
Yellow advisories: the rest of the affected area.
Authorities will likely issue new alerts or update/rescind existing advisories as the storm transits the region over the coming hours. Forecast models indicate heavy snowfall of 80 cm (31 inches) over Hokuriku region and 70 cm (28 inches) over Tohoku region through early Dec. 20. JR East has suspended trains on the Yamagata Shinkansen between Yamagata and Shinjo stations due to heavy snow; operations are estimated to resume around 17:00 Dec. 19. Several other local rail lines are also suspended. Authorities have closed the Kanetsu Expressway between Koide Interchange and Nagaoka Junction, the Banetsu Expressway between Niigata Chuo and Aizuwakamatsu interchanges, the Nihonkai Tohoku Expressway between Niigata Chuo Junction and Arakawa Tainai Interchange, and the Hokuriku Expressway between Niigata Chuo Junction and Joetsu Interchange, Kanazawa Morimoto and Oyabe interchanges on the down line as well as Niigata Chuo Junction and Kakizaki Interchange on the up line. The Tohoku Electric Power Network has reported that around 9,700 houses in Niigata Prefecture are without power due to fallen trees, including 5,000 houses in Sado City. Reports indicate that mobile communications in Sado City, Niigata Prefecture, are disrupted due to heavy snow. Sado City has opened evacuation centers at six facilities in the city, including the Ryotsu Branch and the Akadomari Administrative Service Center. In addition to heavy snowfall, strong wind gusts could lead to periods of blowing and drifting snow. Blizzard conditions are possible. Sporadic power outages are possible throughout the affected area.

    Transport
The winter weather will likely cause additional ground and air transport disruptions across the affected area over the coming days. Flight delays and cancellations are likely due to ground stops and deicing operations at airports in the region. Traffic and commercial trucking delays are possible along regional highways. Difficult and potentially dangerous driving conditions are also likely on secondary and rural roadways in the affected states as maintenance crews prioritize clearing major routes. Authorities could close stretches of a highway if driving conditions become too hazardous. Gusty winds may threaten to topple high-profile vehicles throughout the affected area.
