Fuel Gauge Issues….(A genuine club post!!!!!!)

Has anyone experienced issues with their fuel gauge as on odd occasions mine suddenly shows empty, sometimes from start other times whilst running? It will then suddenly return, so has become an annoying intermittent fault.

The car is just over seven years old, 51,000miles on the clock, (ALL put on by me!) Thinking possibly a faulty sender unit, I guess it can’t be sticking otherwise it would stay the same. Yet to have a look at the manual as to where it is, or how easy it is to get to!!

Thoughts/suggestions appreciated

Thought I would give all our genuine forum users a proper post to get their teeth into instead of all the other crap (spam) appearing on here!

Do you have a DSC module, as it does fuel gauge as well, as did the Ford module.
I found if or when the car’s battery is getting down or knackered the module isn’t always remember or recognised, hence the drop and reconnect symptoms you see.

No DSC module fitted but are you saying it can happen with the ford module too, and as such the battery could be starting to go south.

Original battery still on the car but still seems OK as I have had no other issues.

I thought that the fuel gauge was a symbol or guide without a direct connection to a float in the tank or any mechanical measurement.
just a reassuring retro feature.
my gauge needle reads low if the car thinks that I won’t get far on what’s left.
So if the car thinks I’ll go 20 miles only the reading is just above empty.
then when the car realises I can go over 100 miles it reads half full.
so it judges by driving style?
controlled by software?

Not exactly sure how it works but have checked the manual and there is a dual fuel pump/sender unit in the tank….

but you have to remove the whole tank to get to it!!!
