Head Gasket Upgrade Mk3 Focus RS

Devil Developments (West Sussex, England) are offering Mk3 Focus RS owners the chance to upgrade their engine to prevent the dreaded head gasket failure and include a warranty to 500bhp.

Their package includes a better gasket, stronger head bolts for a superior clamping force along with all associated machining and parts, including an oil change and filter.

As a full drive-in, drive-out package, the price is just £1199, including a full 1 year warranty.

If you would like to take the opportunity to upgrade to aftermarket forged pistons and steel rods at the same time, the cost is an additional £1400.

They have built more of these cars than anyone else in the UK at present, including the UK’s most powerful.

The process takes 2 days start to finish.

I wonder how many RS owners, tired of waiting for a solution from Ford, will decide to take this route?

Nobody seems to have mentioned that every head thats been seen off, the chambers are well wet/sooty, the plugs are what used to be known as ‘carbon fouled’ and you would normally say the motor was running “well rich” !! Ive got an old ‘banger’ in for work that has twin weber 45 dcoes  and the mixtures appear better!! ie.. nice colour plug electrodes and ‘drier’ chambers and exhaust valves, I really think Ford have this engine set up on the ‘rich’ side in order to protect it a bit, I bet the tuners lean it off a tad, that may explain how folk get better mpg with the fpm375 map.

    No nothing.

No Mods. No rockers. Just a chunky knob, thats now been replaced by an RS knob innit.

    No tackiness.

Std as Ford intended, but with a space saver wheel and jack and nuts and wheel brace. oh.. and flaps, a man has got to have flaps.

    Innit?

Indeed 71-bda. Didn’t think motors were running rich nowadays.

Maybe Ford should just send us all there and foot the bill think of the money they would save 😉

I would expect all the valves to be similar colour and not wet and sooty on the inlet side, maybe its down to the headgasket leaking and the ecu compensating for water weakening the mixture as it,s the same on all cylinders.

I was literally thinking about this today, weather their is a Head Gasket upgrade, so I had a nose around and drop on this post.  Might look into this as im dreading mine going and having some numpty Ford engineer striping engine down… Much prefer to do it myself then Ford.

If your going to do the bigger studs and head gasket it would make perfect sense to add the top brace from Norris Designs

The insert is an excellent idea, especially if Ford come out with a field service action to replace early gaskets, get it done at the same time.  Maybe throw in a set of ARP studs as well for good measure.

On that subject. Check out the offering from Mountune USA – optional Darton liners, ARP studs etc, etc, says a lot about what Mountune think the engine needs for high horsepower builds.

These Darton Liners are a bit more reasonable from here Norris Designs in the UK

Many production aluminium blocks suffer from a design weakness of cylinder stability by nature of poor support at the upper deck area when tuning for very high power levels. This ND engine block has the MID liner set professionally CNC installed by us. It is also decked and bored to suit your piston size. In addition to that its been CNC machined for our larger L19 head stud kit to ensure perfect head gasket seal at any power level.

Darton has engineered a superior patented (patent #6,799,541) solution by using a unique designed cylinder sleeve which when siamesed and nested, creates a solid deck of sleeve flanges held in tension, reinforcing the upper deck area (essential for durability) which is called Modular Integrated Deck (MID).

In addition, Darton designs’ manage and enhance water flow from block to head to promote stability of cooling and all sleeves are of the “Wet” design. The enhanced water flow in and around the flange area is possible because of ported water flow control engineering we call “Swirl Coolant Technology™”. This process begins with specific engineering models of respective cylinder head and combustion chamber designs and then we promote increased flow of water in those areas of the upper sleeve area subjected to the most heat. Heat is also dissipated through the use of ” Register Fins”™. There is a different engineering model for each engine and cylinder design.

The benefits of MID liners are:

    – Cast iron performance in an aluminium block
    – Improved block integral strength
    – Improved cooling
    – Kits can be installed by your local machine shop
    – “Wet sleeve” replace-ability
    – High boost and horsepower potential
    – Superior cylinder sealing and ring wear
    – Street, strip or race application
    – Bulletproof Darton ductile iron
    – 130,000psi tensile strength

    Price: £2,799.00 (£3,358.80 Inc Vat @20%)
