    Quaife QBE46Z Ford MMT6 5-Speed Sequential Gearbox

Our two Ford Focus sequential transmissions are currently undergoing testing by Mountune. The eagerly anticipated Quaife QKE45Z and QBE46Z 5-Speed Sequentials cater for the Mk2 and Mk3 Focus ST/RS models respectively. The former is at Mountune in the UK, whilst the latter is over the pond at Mountune USA in California.

Ford’s MMT6 gearbox is most associated with the current generation Mk3 Focus ST and RS.

One of the most popular and accessible hot hatchbacks on UK roads, the Mk3 Focus ST was launched in 2012, producing a healthy 252bhp from the company’s 2.0-litre EcoBoost engine. Although it did away with its predecessor’s Volvo sourced five-cylinder engine, which was beloved by many an enthusiast, the current Focus ST has still remained at the upper-end of the hot hatch rankings. Practicality was addressed by the firm sticking with a 5-door only format, along with interestingly, an estate.

The current Focus RS was launched to great fanfare in early 2015 and has been powered by the 2.3-litre turbocharged inline-four engine, also found in the EcoBoost Mustang. Producing 350bhp with power being sent to all four wheels, the RS can undertake the 0-62 mph sprint in just 4.7 seconds.

Interestingly, many owners of these two sporting Fords have opted to fit Quaife’s Automatic Torque Biasing Differential to improve traction and increase their vehicle’s performance envelope. Indeed, the ATB differential for the Mk3 Focus RS is now approved by Ford when fitted by Mountune or a Ford authorised dealership.

The Quaife QBE46Z 5-speed sequential gearbox is a product designed specifically for use in the Mk3 Focus ST & RS, vehicles initially fitted with Ford’s MMT6 transmission.

    Key features include:

    • Gear-kit reuses original bell-housing from gearbox.
    • Drum style shift mechanism for fast reliable gear changes.
    • Retains OEM clutch, differential, drive-shafts and mounts.
    • Optional Quaife ATB differential.
    • Strengthened outer casing.
    • 5 wider than standard gears for additional strength.
    • Choice of straight cut or helical gears.
    • New generation of gear-change mechanism allows fitment into front or rear wheel drive configurations.
    • Compatible with flat shift systems.
    • Includes Oil Temperature Sensor. Supplied with either a lever and cable or air actuator.

    Gear ratios:
    1st         2nd       3rd       4th       5th
    3.000 – 2.067 – 1.556 – 1.263 – 1.087  – Straight Cut
    3.214 – 1.950 – 1.400 – 1.069 – 0.935 – Helical

    Final drive ratios:
    3.944 – 3.450 – Straight Cut
    3.542 – Helical

That looks a piece of lovely engineering, I hope the old adage ” if it looks right it is right” applies here.

I would have one mounted over fireplace in the lounge as wall art, additional to one in The RS.

Are we looking at £3,000 plus fitting.

May the Ford be with you

Nope. not for me.  Its going to sound like a bag of spanners at idle. Changing gear at anything other than flat out will be clunky and bangy. When has 5 gears ever been better than 6? The ratios for the first 4 gears on the street gearteeth (helical) are near as dammit the same as the std box so the 6 speed std car will get from 5th gear to flat out faster than the 5 speed box will get to top speed ie .. if flat in 4th is 110mph , 110 to 165 will be quicker using 5th and 6th in the std gearbox rather than just 5th in the quaife especially as its got a taller diff which will make it accelerate slower than a std car unless you are using 18 inch wheels!. And the straight cut will have your fillings out in 5 miles and have you getting a serious case of “buyer remorse”. Knowing quaife , it will be £6000 plus fitting

    No nothing.

No Mods. No rockers. Just a chunky knob, thats now been replaced by an RS knob innit.

    No tackiness.

Std as Ford intended, but with a space saver wheel and jack and nuts and wheel brace. oh.. and flaps, a man has got to have flaps.

    Innit?

Theirs obviously a market or they wouldn’t develop an expensive engineering product.

I think Quaife have a little bit more experience with gearbox’s and ratios than the Sex Tourist IMHO

Hammy “Could not any agree more” is that with the above or against the above confused ??

I obviously know funk all about gear gearboxes or diffs or gear ratios..

all the folk Ive built diffs and boxes for and worked out what size wheel/tyre  and diff/gearbox ratios are best for them must be wondering how I do it as I know nothing.

Not needed for the run to Tescos, if it’s not raining, or normal road use but an asset (in my humble opinion) for competition use.

humble-b yes, A badger has been located and spotted in its natural habitat, no further action will be taken unless the pesky blighter causes any more mess.

Mr Tourist of Sex; you are very defensive………………… Why? What would the fuel Injection Clients say erm yep he knows F@*k all innit

Building someone else’s design work is like placing lego blocks together.

Quaife did all the hard work your just Meccano Mike bolting together what Quaife have worked out for you

Its like you said the Ford 6 speed is better for road but the Quaife is a competition box in a similar way as having a 4.1 diff for a road car is a waste of time as per your picture for competition.

Apples and pears really!!!!!!! Or apples and apples ?????????? So compare a competition box with a competition box and a road box with r………………. go on Mike fill in the gap (theirs a clue at the start of this line).

You change stuff to suit your argument all the time, rubbishing the Quaife but comparing it to a road box the argument of a stupid man.

If some one had grafted on a VAG  DSG box and electronics it might have gained a bit more interest?    (Who makes the VAG DSG boxes?).
