2017 RS “drive mode unavailable” “AWD OFF”

Diagnostics indicate no communication from rear power unit. They want to replace entire rear drive.  Does anyone have any thoughts?

    My thoughts.
the awd system is a toy for occasional use. If it gets used a lot it dies.
Anyway, can the rwd unit be dismantled?
could the op have the car reprogrammed as fwd only ?
