Thermal underwear and a hot flask of coffee and the usual difficult decision on what sandwiches to take.

Some wicked mk 2 escorts in the mix of winners ,takes me back to the Lombard RAC rallys we used to spend the week following. That,s when you could spend ages searching for Little Chef,s on the maps,no luxury of sat navs ,no mobile phones just roughing it in a car or van. Those were the day,s.

Agree Andy roughing it was the best bit and a real adventure when you were 18

Lombard RAC rally yep full week away driving hundreds of miles whilst ,eating, sleeping in your car.

Struggling to recall the year, but I do remember  I was asleep in the car, it was snowing and very cold at about 3AM when there was a knock on the window from plod asking was it my car!! Could not get back to sleep, but bacon butty at 7AM was great at roadside cafe.

Great fun as you needed to plan well, read maps, navigate accurately and pace yourself to get to as many stages as possible across the UK.

We did have good communication though, a CB radio, a big amp and a K40 aerial.

Interesting we never paid any entry or parking fees back then but needed help getting out of fields when stuck.

Also had to go to Boots to get your photos developed that would be ready the following day.

May the Ford be with you
