    Just wondering, being an AWD car, if you had tyre damage to 1 tyre, would you need to replace all 4?

    For most awd cars the treadwear needs to be within 2/32’s of each other.

    I got my PTU replaced after 15’000KM in warranty.

    Then they told me all is good with my tyres but when I change back to summer tyres they have to measure all 4 tyres.

    I would say : YES you need to change all 4 tyres, except they are nearly brand new!

    They told me the rolling radius of all 4 have to be less than max. 20mm difference over all 4 !

    Also Audi have this and nearly every AWD car. and always run 4 times the same tyre size 😉

    According to the manual the awd System can handle one New and 3 worn tires without a Problem.

    If anything, if you had 2 brand new tyres with say 7mm and your other two part worns were at 3mm, I would put the new ones on the front ( which is the opposite to what you would do with a front wheel drive car) because… the Focus is set up with the rear wheels being overspun by 1.8% with regards to the front wheels ( by gearing as ford thinks this gives it a RWD bias feel) so the car thinks it has slightly bigger diameter tyres on the rear, slightly stressing all driveline components and adding to tyre wear very slightly. So by putting bigger diameter ( tyres with more tread) on the front you are actually evening things up, if you were to use worn front tyres and brand new on the back, it just adds to the rear bias and increases driveline stress and tyre wear ! On a tyre with a diameter of 25″, 1.8% is about 12mm, so 6mm of tread, so the std car with new tyres all round ‘thinks’ the rears have 7mm tread and the fronts 1mm for example, so putting new on the rear with worn fronts makes things a bit kinky. innit.

    No nothing.

    No Mods. No rockers. Just a chunky knob, thats now been replaced by an RS knob innit.

    No tackiness.

    Std as Ford intended, but with a space saver wheel and jack and nuts and wheel brace. oh.. and flaps, a man has got to have flaps.

    Innit?

    Thanks guys, some interesting responses. I was just thinking ahead as I’ve never owned an AWD car before and wondered whether all 4 would need replaced – I would always replace at least 2 to have a matching set on previous cars as opposed to 1.

    Had my Rs in today for it’s first MoT, needles to say it failed.  It’s done 28K on it’s original tyres, not sure how this split has occurred, tyre is still inflated (somehow) but I’ve opted to renew all of them just in case the others go the same way.  All 4 still have ~3.2mm on them…..

    Evening mate!! ?.

    That’s a DISASTER waiting to happen there!!
    What pressures were your tyres at??
    I’d advise checking your pressures every week!! Don’t rely on the tyre warning light coz it is purely a Warning and it comes on at 26 psi, so if your tyres been under inflated at say 28 psi for quite some time you’d never know?

    I’d also advise getting Hunter 4-Wheel Alignment done when your new tyres are fitted. I got 4-Wheel Alignment done a while back and it’s usually free to check but there is charge if it needs adjusted.

    Also, for easiness, I bought a little hand held digital pressure gauge for about a tenner and keep it in the glove box. Get yourself one of them mate. ?.

    Cheers, Marc.

    I have one of these tire pressure gauge with my road tools:

    I had this for a while, if I ever get stuck on the side of the road its dual purpose:

    • Check the tire pressure.
    • Self protection, let them get some ass whoppin!

    <p style=”text-align: center;”>Smokin Joe – out of curiosity what MPG are you getting? 28,0000m and 3.2mm left, can’t make my mind up if that is indeed amazing on an RS</p>

    Cheers all for your comments………….

    @brembo
    ………I checked my tyres earlier this year and were fine, the new tyres are getting delivered to the garage on Monday and they will fit them Tuesday and carry out the MoT again and as it’s a Ford garage I would hope they carry out a 4 wheel alignment,,,,,

    @nicklulu
    …….cheers mate, I have something similar……

    @1234enough
    ……..I’m getting about 26.5 MPG, when I bought the car last year my son picked it up from Chester and it’s average was 33.9 MPG and all motorway miles and the first owner was 72…….
