I recently fitted the Competition Clutch Stage3 version.
The reason my OEM clutch statefed to slip and spin under load whilst being mapped at at around 530-563bhp until then the Factory clutch held fine or as I thought.

So on removal day all went straight forward first time doing one of these and took me the day about 7-8 hours I guess if you’ve done a few you’ll probably be down to 6 hours, so people shouldn’t really charge you more than £300 for labour to replace the flywheel friction plate release bearing and pressure plate..

Pre replacement the clutch was chattering and pretty noisy. Right so on fitting day removal was straight forward and everything was done and buttoned up. But on inspection of the OEM kit the DMF was on its last legs very worn even thou it was holding the 500+ hp and torque it was battered.

So now I’ve done the 300-500 miles bedding in using various boost setting from stock to 29psi, 7 different maps power levels and options in each one.So well and truly bedded in.

The clutch feels very much like a OEM  unit in operation and feel, the only slight difference is a slightly heavier clutch pedal which you notice at first but after 10 minutes and forever more you don’t even think about it.

I wonder if that lighter Steeda clutch pedal spring would lighten things up a touch??

This assembly is suited for up to 150% increase in torque capacity and it’s the torque that kills your clutch

    Competition Clutch Stage3 comes with

New Flywheel – Flywheel Bolts – Aligning Tool – Friction Plate – Pressure Plate

And Thank you to the Guy at HEL for the upgraded clutch line most appreciated.

    Competion Clutch Stage 3

All in with VAT included £610 (shop about is my advice) as prices varied by around £150

    Kit includes

New Flywheel – New Flywheel Bolts – Aligning Tool – Friction Plate (sprung) – Pressure Plate

Release bearing was an additional £81 including VAT.

Carbon Synchro’s are safe, their still on the shelf in the garage lol

Getting used to the clutch was very quick, in the same way as when the RS was delivered; to what I drove prior, but within 20 -30 minutes you get used to it and after that it becomes the norm.

From what I can feel via the pedal and seat of your pants it currently feels smooth in operation

Very good price for it to inc a flywheel but way to heavy for daily use of your just track then I guess it’s fine but for round town and traffic you get bored very quickly

The reason I took the RS over the A5 Donkey was the heavy clutch comments made in regards the Competition Clutch Stage 3.

So went for a drive to work in the RS yesterday, which basically means rush hour traffic for roughly 40 minutes each way (more mileage added to the bedding in process). As none of my original bedding in was done in rush hour or heavy traffic, so the previous comments had merit and I had to find out for myself.

So setting off and my initial thought was, yes its heavier than the Donkeys pedal. Driving to work multiply gear changes up the box, down the box and repeat basically on arrival home I was more than happy with my leg and the clutch pedals feel and operation. I had no thoughts of its heavy after my initial thinking of its heavier than the Audi’s pedal.

Maybe the pressure plate fingers, may of been revised and maybe lighter in operation than a kit from 2 years ago, reason this may of occurred in the USA on their forums their was a lot of “its real heavy” comments around 2-3 years ago, but they seemed to have petered out from around 2019/20, so as a conclusion I surmise/guess the spring pressure plate may of been revised and pressure required has been reduced.

As I personally feel its slightly heavier than OEM but not to the point it spoils a drive or you think god that’s hard to depress, which leads you on to the drive and you or I don’t even think about it.

Well had my first failure today. Whilst out with friends after a good few miles of country road spirited driving we stopped for coffee and a chat and Micky take of each other.

I had the car ticking over to cool down before shut down.
At this point I ompletely forgot it was ticking over as we where all taking and laughing etc so must of been 10-15 minutes.

End result ticking over fouls up the plugs properly these where Denso ITV, 27’s I think from memory.

Found a car parts shop an hour later and swapped out for standard factory spec plugs car runs sweet again at all boost levels and at full tilt to

Question- What is the benefit of One Step Cooler Spark Plugs ????

Well had my 3rd service at Ford with 3 simple instructions –
    Don’t Change the air filter
Don’t Change the spark plugs (ITV27)
    Don’t wash it

Two out of three isn’t bad but could of been a real expensive mistake.

So on a short drive and about 40 miles in I changed the map to 2bar setting and whoosh of it went like the proverbial scalded cat. Let off then coasted and cruised again then blasted the throttle again misfire pop pop bang misfire stutter pop bang bang, that’s not good at all.

So I lifted off the throttle almost instantly and yep Ford erm changed the plugs

At least their a good colour so all’s not bad

    Cheers Mr Ford

So they don’t overheat in a tuned engine, but they are more liable to foul when used with low load.

I’m currently using 3 step cooler they just run at higher temps something around 2000+ degrees. More boost higher temps more chance of over heating the plug as the step cooler plug have a fat ceramic body which keeps the plugs cooler and dissipate the heat better.

You are right they foul up if you say have your car ticking over for 7 minutes or more or could be an even shorter time period.

If they foul up once they will clean up and recover, foul them up again and in the bin they go as it doesn’t matter if they are spotless they won’t recover.

Tuning is all about compromise, tune for power, but then when you don’t use it to that, issues may occur.

Hats to anyone who tunes, love reading about it and in admiration who do it. 👍👍

    @Nate

You are so right they have been around a long time but they do work. If a new type plug would help prevent fouling that would be useful.

Heat range of 9 for NGK and 27 for Denso which is the 3 step colder

What would you recommend for a newer 3 step colder plug.
