Here goes the Europe Snow report as of the 21st October 2023

AUSTRIA FORECAST Remaining cold with the freezing point moving between 1000 and 2500 metres through the 24-hour cycle and the remainder of this week. Much more unsettled weather than we’ve had in recent weeks with snow flurries and potentially heavier snowfalls at higher elevations.

SWITZERLAND FORECAST Skies have been mostly clear over recent days but the remainder of this week looks much more unsettled with temperatures staying low and the chance of more significant snowfall on higher Swiss slopes if we’re lucky.

FRANCE FORECAST Remaining around freezing or a little below, above 2500m, with the freezing point dropping into valleys overnight. More unsettled conditions with the chance of some snowfall on high slopes.

ITALY FORECAST The current forecast is very promising with temperatures remaining below freezing, getting colder with the potential for significant snowfall at the weekend or early next week.

SCANDINAVIA FORECAST Cold but mostly sunny for the week ahead in Scandinavia. Up in Levi and Rukatemperatures are expected to be in the -4 to -10C range so it feels very cold and consistent snowmaking conditions too, but with little or no natural snowfall expected there.

    The rest of the world

CANADA FORECAST Staying cold but fairly dry in Alberta’s mountains with temperatures in the -4 to +4C range on higher slopes, valley temperatures peaking at +10C in the daytime. Light clouds with sunny spells are forecast but not much rain.

USA FORECAST After last weekend’s snowfall it has turned sunny again and those conditions are expected to continue through the coming week. Overnight lows on high slopes will still get 4 or 5 degrees below freezing and be about low enough for snowmaking but daytime highs may wipe out the snow made.

JAPAN FORECAST Changable conditions with some overnight subzero temperatures and the chance of snow, but then +10C and rain within 24 hours afterwards. So still autumnal and some way off sustainable winter conditions for snow sports. Southern HemisphereThe 2023 ski season in the southern hemisphere is all but over now with all but three ski areas now closed. All ski areas in Australia closed in September (although another dusting of snowfall was reported there last week) and all in southern Africa in August so that’s it until winter 2024. All ski areas in the Andeshad also expected to have been closed by last weekend, but Catedral (0/80cm / 0/32″) made the unexpected announcement of a further week’s extension last week to the 22nd of October. Most centres have now closed in New Zealand too with Cardrona and Mt Hutt among the latest to end their seasons last weekend. Mt Hutt actually closed two days earlier than expected, blaming the deteriorating conditions. Cardrona was rewarded for sticking to its Sunday closing plan though with a good snowfall on the Saturday for final-day freshies. Two centres remain open though, both on the North Island and both on Mt Ruapehu. Whakapapa ski areas is expected to stay open until Sunday, Turoa, some reports say, for a few days into next week, making it expected to be the last in the southern hemisphere to close for the 2023 season.

@red-leader, thanks for the update. I’ve read it’s going to be a lot cooler by the end of next week so we shouldn’t be surprised winter is approaching fast this year 😹

Freezing in Stoke tonight. Just got back in and it’s around 4 degrees but the wind makes it feel really chilly.

Hoping for a cheeky break abroad soon somewhere warm. Hopefully….Maybe…..Probably not…..But wishing for one

AUSTRIA FORECAST The forecast continues to look good for snow accumulation with light to moderate falls expected most days through the coming week above about 1500m. Temperatures remaining below freezing 24-7 above 2,000m, with daytime highs of around +5C in valleys.
SWITZERLAND FORECAST There’s still no big change in the current snowy weather forecast with more areas likely to see more snow and low temperatures through to the weekend, possibly rain at lower elevations though.
FRANCE FORECAST It looks like we’re heading towards a third week of regular snowfall with lots more snow in the forecast for the remainder of this week. Temperatures remaining low too, in the -12C to -2C range at 3,000m, -5 to +5C at 1500m
ITALY FORECAST Another fairly promising week for snowfall and low temperatures in Italy, if less snow in the forecast than for the previous fortnight. The freezing point will be at around 1600m much of the week and just getting a few degrees above at lower elevations. Light to moderate snowfall (2-7cm / 1-3″) most days
GERMANY FORECAST There’s not a great deal of change in the immediate forecast with still more snow forecast, along with cold temperatures, on high slopes. Some of this will be rain on Germany’s lower slopes at traditional resorts.
SCANDINAVIA FORECAST Staying very cold and mostly sunny in the north of the region with temperatures in the -10C to -25C range in Lapland. Largely clear skies are forecast but with some light snow showers
SCOTLAND FORECAST The recent cold temperatures will ease a little with valley temperatures climbing up towards +7 or +8C, but remaining very changeable weather with showers of snow on mountaintops, and rain on lower slopes continuing.

SPAIN / ANDORRA FORECAST There’s not much change in the forecast with clear skies, no precipitation and warm temperatures continuing at least to the weekend.

BULGARIA / ROMANIA FORECAST Quite a promising forecast with light to moderate snowfalls expected daily through the remainder of this week and mountain temperatures in the range of freezing down to -10C. Warmer in valleys (freezing to +8C)
CZECH REPUBLIC / SLOVAKIA FORECAST Remaining fairly wintery over the remainder of this week with light to moderate snowfalls of 1-10cm (1-4″) expected daily on higher slopes and temperatures in the -7C to +2C range up high. Warmer in valleys but not that much more, -2C to +5C generally.
ROCKIES FORECAST Unfortunately we seem to be in a bit of a holding pattern of clear skies. Although overnight lows will continue to be in the 20s Fahrenheit and cold enough for snowmaking, there’s no natural snowfall forecast for now and daytime highs in the 40s may thaw some of the snowpack, slowing progress

USA WEST FORECAST It’ll be cold, generally below freezing in the mountains, but dry and sunny for much of the West Coast. However, a weak front is expected to bring a few inches (5-10cm) of snowfall to the Sierras on Thursday/Friday

MIDWEST FORECAST Unfortunately there’s no clear sign that conditions are going to improve in the next few days with daytime highs still in the low 50s, overnight lows above freezing and more dry weather expected.

USA EAST FORECAST Unfortunately, the forecast is looking rather warm over the remainder of this week which may thwart snowmaking efforts for the time being. Largely dry but with a high chance that what precipitation there is will be rain not snow at most elevations
CANADA WEST FORECAST After the unsettled weather of the last few days things look dry and sunny in the west for the remainder of this week. Daytime highs at resorts are still at the freezing point, and overnight lows below -10C, so snowmaking systems can work at least where resorts have them.

CANADA EAST FORECAST Unfortunately, it looks like temperatures will climb a little over the coming days so snowmaking will get more problematic and forecast precipitation will probably fall as rain to higher elevations
JAPAN FORECAST A midweek warm front will set back the snowfalls of the weekend and the start of this week with daytime temps going back up to +10 to {15C, but they should drop again by Friday when another front is expected to move in and temperatures drop back below freezing.
